Constructs of desire (dupes) and regeneration

In these sculptures strange flowers and fungal structures meet. Constructed from colorful plastic parts, the flowers never die, and never lived. Still they feel cheerful, with a childlike innocence. But these petrochemical flowers, made from oil, are ghosts of a deep-time past and mirror the complex realities of the cultivated flower industry.

Symbolizing our urge to control life and our relentless desire for beauty, cultivated flowers become icons of human engineering: designed, bred, and grown to meet our ideals of perfection.

Holding up these artificial flowers are structures grown from living mycelium—the thread-like network of fungi. Fungi have become the latest eco-trend, celebrated as nature’s hidden heroes—healers, recyclers, connectors, givers of life....
